Director, Zhejiang Provincial Engineering Research Center for Material Molding and Integration Technology and Intelligent Manufacturing Equipment
Director, Integrated Computational Material Engineering (ICME) Research Center
Chair Professor, Hangzhou City University
Pursuing Studies
SU Xuming was born in Meicheng Town, and grew up there. In 1980, he was admitted to the Civil Engineering Department, Tianjin University. At university, he identified a direction that he was interested in and was determined to devote his life to--physics. Back then, there was an extreme scarcity of physics talents in China. So SU Xuming took the graduate entrance examination and was admitted to the Department of Mechanics, Tianjin University. Afterwards, he entered Shanghai University, and studied under the guidance of Prof. QIAN Weichang, a renowned mechanics expert.
Studying abroad
In 1990, SU Xuming’s remitting efforts paid off. He was awarded the Humboldt Research Fellowship, and was invited to the University of Kaiserslautern as a visiting scholar. He then studied material structure at the Department of Aeronautics, Purdue University, and received another doctoral degree. In 1996, he joined Ford Motor Company, the then second largest automotive company in the world. As his research deepened, he became a world-renowned expert.
Manufacturing the Future
In February 2021, SU Xuming returned to China and joined Hangzhou City University. During his visits to factories, he identified the footprint of the transformation of China’s manufacturing industry. By embedding his experience into teaching, SU Xuming not only imparts knowledge to students, but enhances their ability to acquire knowledge. As a result, students grow together with the society. Aiming at the future manufacturing, SU Xuming is manufacturing the future.
