Upholding Learning and Seeking Truth
Introduction to the School of Medicine, Hangzhou City University
Established in 1999, the School of Medicine, Hangzhou City University (HZCU), is always guided by Xi Jinping's Thoughts on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, motivated by the School motto of Promoting Virtue and Medical Excellence; Upholding Learning and Seeking Truth, yearning to become a first-class medical school with distinctive features, high quality, great vitality, and a high reputation at home and abroad.
The School offers three undergraduate programs: Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, and Nursing, and houses three departments, one experimental teaching center, and two research institutes, with 123 faculty members and over 1400 undergraduate and postgraduate students. It has established several provincial and municipal research platforms, including the Key Laboratory of Novel Targets and Drugs Study for Neural Repair in Zhejiang Province, the Hangzhou Municipal Innovative Drugs and Technology Concept Verification Center for Major Brain Diseases of Hangzhou City University, the Institute for Brain and Cognitive Science, etc. The School also possesses the first high-performance small animal Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system in the province. With numerous research achievements, including several Second Prizes in the Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Award and the Science and Technology Award of China Association of Chinese Medicine, the Shool's overall educational quality and performance in various aspects have been improving evidently.
1. Talents: "Primary Resource" for Activating Development
The School prioritizes faculty development, recognizing them as the "primary resource" for academic excellence. It has cultivated a well-structured, vibrant and energetic teaching team led by the university’s first member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, "dual-appointed" academician, Professor Duan Shumin, and constituted by other distinguished members such as Professor Tan Jun, a national-level professor, and Professor Zhao Tiejun, a Provincial-level professor. Notably, this team includes other six provincial and ministerial-level experts, and one scholar recognized on the "Elsevier Highly Cited Researchers." An impressive 82.9% of the faculty hold doctoral degrees.

2. Innovation: Resource Integration for Empowering Development
The School actively promotes the construction of major scientific research platforms. In November 2022, the Key Laboratory of Novel Targets and Drugs Study for Neural Repair was designated as a key laboratory of Zhejiang Province. June 2023 marked the opening of the new building for the Institute for Brain and Cognitive Science helmed by Dean Duan Shumin. Moreover, the Aging and Tumor Research Center, led by Professor Zhou Fangfang, the Distinguished Young Scholars of China recipient, has made significant contributions, publishing numerous articles in top international journals.
The School is dedicated to bringing out the full potential of scientific research. In 2022, 17 provincial and national-level research projects were approved, 76 high-quality academic papers were published, and its ESI highly cited papers comprised an impressive 77.8% of total publications in HZCU.
