Aiming at the new demands of the national urban and rural development in the new era for senior talents in territorial spatial planning and the new trend of the development of international planning disciplines, Hangzhou City University set up the first School of Spatial Planning and Designing in China on June 21st, 2021, to extend the educational resources of the planning disciplines of Zhejiang University and integrate its resources of architecture and other related disciplines.
The School currently has 2 undergraduate programs in Architecture and Urban and Rural Planning. The architecture program passed the national assessment of undergraduate (five-year) architecture major in higher education institutions, organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, in May 2023, becoming the first undergraduate program in HZCU that passed the professional accreditation assessment. Simultaneously, HZCU became the third in Zhejiang Province to pass the assessment of architecture majors. More than 350 undergraduate students are enrolled and graduate and doctoral students are jointly trained with Zhejiang University, Chongqing University, East China Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University of Technology, etc. There are 6 doctoral supervisors, 13 master's supervisors, and more than 30 postgraduates under joint training. In April 2023, the Teacher Party branch of the Department of Urban and Rural Planning was selected as one of the second batch of "Double-Leadership" teacher party branch secretaries in Zhejiang Province. In March 2024, it was selected as one of the fourth batch of units for the cultivation and establishment of "National Model Party Branches" for party-building work.
The School has an excellent teaching team with reasonable structure, high educational qualifications, extensive teaching experience, strong research and practical capabilities, and a spirit of innovation and exploration. There are 81 teaching staff, and 43 are full-time teachers, including 1 highly cited scientist around the world in Clarivate and 1 leading talent of Zhejiang Province High-level Talent Special Support Program and Ministry of Natural Resources High-level Scientific and Technological Innovation Talent Project (Land Space Planning Industry). 20 faculty members with senior titles (11 people with high grades, 9 people with deputy high grades), accounting for 46.51% of the faculty team, 34 are with PhD, accounting for 79.07%. 6 faculty members are at the level of Qiantang Scholars and above.
The School adheres to the cultivation path of integrating science and education with industry and education, leveraging the characteristics of architectural planning disciplines, and actively engaging in social services.
It has established strategic partnerships with government departments, enterprises, and institutions, including but not limited to:

Collaborations are around research project incubation, transformation of research results, topic research, talent training, internship, and practical cooperation.
Since its establishment, the School faculty team has accumulated 25 provincial and ministerial-level or higher research projects, including 4 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. It has won 3 provincial and ministerial or higher awards such as the Ninth Award for Outstanding Achievements in Scientific Research of Higher Education Institutions (Humanities and Social Sciences) of the Ministry of Education and Youth Achievement Award, and published 72 articles in domestic and foreign high-level journals.
